What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a digestive system disorder. Some people suffering from IBS can find their symptoms can seriously affect the quality of their life. IBS has been shown to affect up to one in five people in the UK at some stage in their life, making it one of the most common disorders of the digestive system.

Women are more likely than men to suffer with IBS, and their symptoms are often more severe. Some sufferers have constipation; others have diarrhoea, whilst others may well suffer from both. Pain may be anything from mild to severe and may occur at the same time daily.

Symptoms of IBS

  • Stomach Pains
  • Nausea (sickness)
  • Wind
  • Diarrhoea and/or
  • Constipation
  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Muscle Pains
  • Cramps

What causes IBS?

The simple answer is no-one really knows. Some research seems to indicate that IBS could be caused by part of the gut becoming over-active or going into spasm. It is also sometimes reported that it could be a hereditary condition. What’s clear is that the symptoms can be made worse by stress, and/or particular foods.

How can Hypnotherapy help with IBS?

A recent study, reported in the Daily Mail, indicates that hypnotherapy can be very effective in alleviating the symptoms of IBS. The researchers found that almost three-quarters (71%) of patients responded well to hypnotherapy and most did not deteriorate over time.

They concluded that “the beneficial effects of hypnotherapy appear to last at least five years”, making it “a viable therapeutic option” for treating IBS.
